And so the scene was set for the grand final on friday night 9.20 pm. After our magnificent win in the semifinals, hopes were up and expectations were high. Turnout was great as well, many more then the number who originally turned up for the semifinals.
I couldn't believe that the Trinity team turned up in LIVERPOOL'S JERSEYS! Travesty! Tarnishing Liverpool's name! No way!
Anyhow, the masses of Ormond supporters were brought harshly back to earth as soon as the game started. We were outthought, outfought, outfoxed, outwitted, outplayed, and even outsized as soon as the game began. Soon after the match began, we conceded a goal, and it was all downhill from there. With their star striker D-Rock (a goal and an assist) and their magnificent Carragher-like defender Wang (who even scored a goal), they calmly took control of the game. Sporadic incidents involving our captain Dicko and some Trinity players were the highlight of Ormond's game, one of which resulted in a yellow card for Trinity's defender Ali.
It wasn't until the 2nd half that Trinity scored their next 2 goals, and soon after that, from another incident with Dicko, their defender Ali got sent off, and it was Trinity who was outnumbered. However, even though we had a man advantage, we somehow conspired to spurn 3 chances in a row immediately after that, and sad to say, the Intercollegiate Soccer Final rapidly turned out to be what is to be known as The Friday Night Massacre.

Intercollegiate Soccer Semifinals: Ormond College v International House
This morning, Ormond well deservedly beat IH 3-2 in a topsy-turvy, see-saw match with a goal at the last minute. We were clearly the more technical team with well crafted moves and 2 star players in our captain (and left back) Dicko who led the team magnificently, and the Michael Owen-like Andy who scored the crucial 2nd goal, while IH scored their 2 goals from from 2 sublime pieces of individual skill from their striker Dil.
I think the sun got in her eyes.
Even Prof Hugh Collins, our master, turned up to watch the match at some point, before mysteriously disappearing as if he was never there.
Next match, the final, tomorrow night, against Trinity College.

I always see those pictures they put in brochures when advertising for a particular university and thought they were just getting some students to act out sitting in a park and chatting and having a whale of a time. Well, it seems that I thought wrong.

I used to be part of the IMSS in my first year in Melbourne. (I described what was IMSS in my previous blog, here and here.) Of course, I'm now in my 3rd year already and the committee has changed, but the objectives still remain the same.
Along with the society's objectives and goals, there are quite a few other things that has remained constant these 3 years, and one of them is the IMSS Pancake and Champagne Day.
I remember back in first year when Chang Yang and I were struggling to come up with a good poster for the event.
It looks much better in colour here than it did when we photocopied it out into black and white. On hindsight, I think I'd have used a different and more catchy font instead of the boring one that we used.
Anyhow, just yesterday, it was time for this year's Pancake Day.
Unfortunately I couldn't be bothered fighting against the sea of med students to get a pancake for myself.
And here are some of the committee members in action.
I remember that last year, I was behind the bbq pit.
Thankfully, I did not have to help them clear up this year.

Yesterday night was the most exciting Friday night that I have experienced in a long while. I know other people may have different opinions but I thoroughly, genuinely enjoyed myself.
Usually, Friday nights would see me going to the internet cafe to play DotA and I'll come home after 12 and that will be that. Yesterday night, was the Melbourne University Overseas Student Service (MUOSS) Night Market. Basically pasar malam lah. And pasar malam means food.
So there I was at 6.40pm, getting ready to leave my room, when it RAINED. Heavily. But that's a GOOD thing because Melbourne has been experiencing a drought for ages. Any longer without rain and pretty soon we won't even be able to bathe.
Thus I grabbed my umbrella and trod down to uni, evading puddles of water on the way there.
It was difficult taking pictures in the rain though. Hmm.
Hungry? Or course.
That's not the CCS (Chinese Cultural Society) stall though. Ramli wannabes. But not bad. I had 2 of those burgers.
The Malaysians of Melbourne University (MoMU) had a stall there as well. And they were selling Roti John and Teh Tarik. Sad to say, I'm not in the club. But the food was good.
So finally we left the night market, and proceeded back to Ormond.
Jon and I wanted to play a game of DotA before attending Movie Night in the Junior Common Room (JCR) in Ormond. However, at about 10 pm, Melbourne was suddenly plunged into a city wide blackout.
Heh.
Let's try it again.
Well then, a premature end to my night. Not for my friends though. They, went down to Lygon Street for shisha.

Too much time on my hands
I wonder how long I can keep this up with random postings. Its been 3 days plus 1 already, and its still active.
So its the holidays and I've too much time on my hands. I've been surfing the net much more than I would have done normally, and I found out that Taylor's College (where I did my GCE 'A' Levels) recently staged The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie. Now that I've left Taylor's for about 2 years already, this shouldn't mean anything to me whatsoever, but coincidentally, I attended the same play by The Chinese Theater Group of Melbourne University recently as well.
Now I don't understand any chinese, and the play that I watched was in chinese but I still went because of 3 reasons. The reasons are (not necessarily in any order of importance):
1) My friend was the producer (or was it co-producer?) of the play
2) I'm a fan of Agatha Christie
3) They had English subtitles
I now want to say that the guy who was controlling the screen
projecting the subtitles could and should have done wayyyyy better. Those of us who didn't understand chinese had no idea what was being said during quite a few moments in the play because he did not change the subtitles fast enough.
That being said, it was a great play nevertheless, although I was a bit disappointed with their ending as I felt it had a lot of loose ends unexplained and did not quite capture the essence and lacked the power of an Agatha Christie 'explanation', if you know what I mean.
I would have loved to have attended the play by Taylor's College, not because I didn't like the one that I watched, no, but I really would have appreciated the opportunitiy to see an interpretation of the play by fellow Malaysian students. There are some of the pictures of the Taylor's College play available here and although I do not know very much about taking photographs, and I do not know this guy, I must say that his pictures are awesome. A picture is worth a thousand words. How I would have loved to be there.
I don't really have any pictures of the Melbourne Uni play except for this crap one taken by yours truly....
...but this is a wallpaper taken from the Chinese Theater Group Website:

And finally, (and I just can't seem to resist doing this), food! This I just had for lunch:
Sarawak Mee, from a foodcourt somewhere in Taman Desa.
